About Rik Catlow

This site is designed, coded and updated by me, Rik Catlow. headshotI live with my wife Wassa, daughter Becca, and a fat tabby cat named Bo in Charlotte, NC. I currently work for Bank of America as Senior Visual Designer. I advocate for web standards, the user and visual design simplicity.

This site was designed as a place for me to show my professional work. As some of you may know, I run another site that primarily houses my artwork, which is purely a personal project. Over the last 12 years, I’ve built a resumé and portfolio that includes work for a variety of clients, from ground-floor start-ups to multi-national corporations. I hope that this site gives you a sense of what I’m capable.

What I can do

Starting out, I was strictly a designer. My education was in art and illustration, but I’ve always had a curiosity about how things work. So as my years as a web designer have progressed, I’ve picked up more web developer skills. I enjoy collaborating with other smart folks, but also like being able to do things from start to finish. Below are some of my skills.

  • Interaction Design — Deploying web user interfaces from design to code.
  • Information Architecture — Organizing and labeling web sites to support usability and findability.
  • XHTML Markup & CSS — Using coding best practices for building web sites with web standards.
  • PHP & MYSQL — Experience using Smarty, other templating languages and light scripting.
  • WordPress Themes — Created a number of WordPress Themes and plugins.

  • Get Connected — Check me out on Linkedin.
  • View My Music — Keep up with what’s on my iPod at Last.fm.
  • Get the Picture — Pix and artwork up on Flickr.
  • Links I’m Saving — Here are my Delicious links.

About this site

This site is built using WordPress 2.7 headshotas the CMS and is hosted on MediaTemple’s GridServer. The design and development of the WordPress theme was accomplished on Mac OS X 10.5 using Adobe Photoshop for the design, Textmate for hand-coding templates, and Transmit for FTPing files. I’ve installed Google Analyticator, WP Lightbox 2, XML-Sitemap WordPress plugins, along with Akismet for comment spam.

All the XHTML and CSS should validate, but some quirks may pop up from time to time.
